UCC Library News

Exciting things are afoot at the UCC Library!

This summer the UCC Library staff has been hard at work procuring and organizing and reclassifying and rearranging collections for your enjoyment and education, and to satisfy their own needs for accurate collection coordination!

New materials: Recent acquisitions

The Library has made it their mission to evaluate current holdings to ensure that they are meeting the needs of our faculty, staff, and students alike. We have weeded out over 3,000 outdated, unused, uninspired, or just terribly horrific titles to make way for multiple new collections as well as improved existing collections! New collections include: Leisure reading --- It's not just about current topics in academia! Sometimes you NEED to know what the actual intended story was and not that hideous mess that turned out to be season two....looking at you, The Witcher*! (Opinions here are those of the author and do not reflect the viewpoint of the UCC Library...even if they ARE ACCURATE).

On a more serious note...

NoodleTools logoThe library has now procured a subscription to a Citation Management Tool, NoodleTools. Students and educators who come from Roseburg Public Schools may recall using this tool to help them learn how to create in-text and bibliographic citations, as well as maintain annotated bibliographies, and organize their research.

With the assistance of the newly created Teaching & Learning Center the Library is proud to share one of their favorite acquisitions! If anyone says that citations aren't sexy...well, they are CLEARLY LYING. Because they are. And also, we love that this tool will help you to stay organized, but also to understand the pieces of a citation, and to be prepared to go on to a more advanced class/degree or win at trivia night. We're happy with both, as long as you can successfully CITE YOUR SOURCES. Click the link below to learn more!

In another partnership with the Teaching & Learning Center, the Library was able to procure a one-year subscription to The Lund Report. This Oregon-specific resource provides "timely, accurate, in-depth and insightful" research into the health care industry. Not just for the medical fields, and written in plain, easily understandable language, this promises to help all of our students, faculty, and staff understand what is going on with the ever-tumultuous healthcare industry here in Oregon, and nationwide.

Kelly Peter, New Director of Library & Learning Commons

Kelly Peter UCC's new library director holding a bookKelly Peter is the new Director of Library & Learning Commons. She holds master’s degrees in library science from Emporia State University in Kansas and public administration from the University of Kansas. Additionally, she received her associate’s degree from Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas and her bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Kansas. While most of her career has comprised of work within public libraries in various capacities, she states she has been a semi-professional student and life-long learner for decades and is thoroughly excited to be in a community college environment.

Kelly is a Kansas native and has lived throughout the Midwest and West Coast. Five years ago, she arrived in Roseburg and has enjoyed every minute of it. As an avid lover of the outdoors, she spends a great deal of time adventuring throughout Douglas County and recently joined the Douglas County Search & Rescue mountain team to put her skills to use. When not found in the stacks in the library or training with Search and Rescue, she spends time throwing pottery, riding her motorcycles, and snuggling with her dogs.

She looks forward to engaging with students, staff, faculty, and the community at large to find innovative ways the library can meet the needs of all users and make the library and learning commons a central hub of campus.

Snowy day on April 11

Hurray! It's the end of the spring term and we all made it. We're a little wiser, a little smarter, a little happier, and a little farther along in our journey throughout 2022. I know that it's currently bright and sunny and 70+ degrees, but I wanted to remind you of this day, April 11. The day started off a tad gray, then got nice and sunny, then started raining, the rain turned to sleet, the sleet turned to snow, and then the snow went away and we were back in sunshine. This all happened in a matter of mere hours. I personally love days like these because they help put things into perspective. Something might seem hard at the time, but no matter what, it shall pass, after all, it's not a Balrog up against Gandalf the Gray!

Congratulations on making it through, we are proud of each and every one of you. Don't forget to stop by and see us this summer, stay tuned for our updated hours. The UCC Library staff will be hard at work this summer on a number of projects that we're VERY excited to share with you soon.

Happy summer, and be safe!
